Sunday Science: Aircraft Design and Operation for Safety

January 2, 2022 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Speaker: Bill Sample

Topic: Aircraft Design and Operation for Safety

Time:  10:00am Mountain Standard Time

Place:  ZOOM Meeting

Summary:
Bill will discuss how safety statistics for aircraft compare to other forms of transportation.   Government agencies around the world regulate the design and operation of aircraft.  The regulations vary with the size of the aircraft and what it is used for. He will present the various design requirements, pilot licensing, and operating rules as they apply to tiny ultralight aircraft up through airliners.

Bio:
Bill has a BS in Electrical Engineering and an MS in Engineering Management.  He worked as an Avionics Systems Engineer for 38 years designing electronics for aircraft and space vehicles.  One of his responsibilities was insuring that the designs complied with world-wide government regulations that enforce safety requirements in the design and use of the equipment.  He has made good use of his designs by logging more than 7,000 hours as a pilot.  He holds Air Transport and Flight Instructor ratings in single and multi-engine aircraft.  He has more than 120 students who have received various levels of FAA pilot licenses giving him insight into how pilots are trained for safety.  He earned college money working as an Air Taxi pilot where he flew under the FAA operating rules that insure safe operations when carrying passengers and cargo for hire.
