Sunday Science – Aircraft Design and Operation for Safety
“Aircraft Design and Operation for Safety” presented by Bill Samples
How safe is flying? How does it compare to other common modes of transportation? The US Bureau of Transportation Safety creates annual reports to answer this question. How do governments and industry regulate the design and operation of aircraft for safety? Well, it is through many complex rules and processes, but Bill did this for a living and will give a high-level overview of how it works. At the end of this evidence-based presentation those with a fear of flying may come to an understanding that the trip to the airport is generally more dangerous than the flight itself for the airlines and less so for small planes.
Bill is a flight instructor with over 7000 hours logged flight time. He earned his BS in Electrical Engineering and an MS in Engineering Management and worked as an Avionics Systems Engineer for thirty-two years, working on electronics for aircraft and space vehicles.
Sunday Science is free and open to the public. Doors open at 9:30 a.m. and the talk will start at 10 a.m. The Sunday Science Hospitality Committee welcomes any contributions to the “treat table,” including fruit and baked goods. Coffee will be served.
