SUMMARY:Sunday Science: The Value of Research on Local Thistles
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr. F. Leland Russell\nTopic: The Value of Research on Local Thistles \nDescription: \nThe question of what influences the size of plant populations\, including those in the Arkansas Valley\, is the topic for the next Central Colorado Humanist Sunday Science program on Nov. 7. \nThe program begins at 10 a.m.\, presented by Dr. F. Leland Russell. It will explore why some species are rare and others abundant\, as well as managing species and working to increase populations of endangered species. \nThe program will examine past and ongoing research in Colorado and Nebraska studying the impact of insect herbivores in limiting populations of the native Platte Thistle\, focusing on comparisons of the species’ status at the edge of its range in the Upper Arkansas River Valley to its range center in Nebraska. \nDr. Russell worked with scientist and Salida Humanist Dr. Svata Louda in her lab at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in post-doctoral research\, examining interactions between an exotic\, invasive thistle\, musk thistle\, and the native wavyleaf thistle\, both impacted by an exotic weevil introduced as a biological control for musk thistle. \nRussell majored in Biology at Carleton College in Minnesota\, and earned a PhD from the Botany Department at the University of Texas at Austin. Since 2005\, Russell has been a professor in the Biology Department at Wichita State University with research on the effects of herbivores\, both invertebrates and vertebrates\, upon plant populations. \n  \nBio Submitted by Speaker:   \nMy interest in plants\, animals and the natural world grew from the summers I spent with my grandfather on his cattle farm in central Missouri. I majored in Biology at Carleton College in Minnesota. I earned my PhD from the Botany Department at the University of Texas at Austin. My dissertation addressed effects of browsing and acorn consumption by white-tailed deer upon regeneration of Spanish oak\, an endemic oak species to central Texas. After teaching for a year at St. Edward’s University in Austin TX\, I joined Dr. Svata Louda’s lab at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln as a post- doctoral researcher. As a post-doc\, I collaborated with Dr. Louda and Dr. Tatyana Rand to examine indirect interactions between an exotic\, invasive thistle\, musk thistle\, and a native thistle\, wavyleaf thistle\, that were mediated by an exotic weevil\, introduced as biological control for musk thistle. Since 2005\, I have been a professor in the Biology Department at Wichita State University where my research continues to address effects of herbivores\, both invertebrates and vertebrates\, upon plant populations and to investigate spatial and temporal variation in herbivores’ effects on plants. \nJoin Zoom Meeting

SUMMARY:Sunday Science: The Problems With Today's High Potency THC Products
DESCRIPTION:Libby Stuyt\, MD\nSpeaker: Libby Stuyt\, MD\nTopic: The Problems with today’s high potency THC products \nDescription: \nWhen Colorado legalized medical marijuana in 2000\, the highest THC potency was 5 % in the plant and there were no concentrates. Concentrates began to appear in 2010 and have increased THC potency\, some above 90% THC. Because these products have been aggressively marketed as “medical” (without any research to document safety or efficacy)\, people think they are safe. We have a significant increase in adolescents and young adults using these products with negative consequences.\nAt the conclusion of this presentation\, participants should be able to: \n\nUnderstand how today’s marijuana is not like the marijuana they may have used in the past.\nDescribe the effect of THC on the developing brain.\nDiscuss how addiction happens and how addictive drugs work in the brain.\nDiscuss the role high potency THC cannabis plays in addiction\, anxiety\, depression\, suicide\, psychosis\, violence\, cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome\, and cognitive impairment.\nUnderstand the regulatory gaps in Colorado that have negatively affected our most vulnerable citizens and recent legislation that attempts to mitigate some of the consequences\n\nBio:   \nDr. Stuyt is a board-certified Addiction Psychiatrist and has worked in the addiction/behavioral health field since 1990. She was the Medical Director for the Circle Program\, a 90-day inpatient treatment program\, funded by the state of Colorado\, for persons with co-occurring mental illness and substance abuse who have failed other levels of treatment from June 1999 to May 2020. She was instrumental in helping the Circle Program to become tobacco free in January 2000 and has been a strong advocate of the need to address all addictions at the same time\, including tobacco\, to improve outcomes. She has been actively incorporating complementary treatments into treatment programs\, including the 5-point ear acupuncture NADA (National Acupuncture Detoxification Association) protocol and BST (Brain Synchronization Therapy)\, to help patients recover from addiction as well as trauma which often underlie addiction and chronic pain issues. Her current mission is to educate as many people as possible on the un-intended consequences of the commercialization of marijuana in Colorado\, focusing primarily on the deleterious effects of high potency THC on the developing brain. \nJoin Zoom Meeting

SUMMARY:Sunday Science: Geology of the Arkansas Valley
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Cindy Williams\nTopic: Sunday Science: Geology of the Arkansas Valley \nCindy Williams\nDescription:\nJoin local geologist Cindy Williams for a talk on how local landscapes have been shaped by some amazing geologic events. The program will start with a brief geologic history of the Chaffee County area. With that history as a framework\, we will take a virtual tour of land marks across the county and beyond. What amazing geologic tale connects the “Castles” near Trout Creek pass\, Buffalo Peaks\, Mt Shavano and Castle Rock? Is it true that Chaffee County was once the home of a massive volcano? Where did the giant boulders on the valley floor come from? Come learn the answers! \nBio:\nCindy Williams is an energetic community volunteer and the co-lead of Envision Chaffee County. Williams has worked for 30 years in the international mining industry. She served as Vice President of Solutions and Innovation and Vice President of Businesses Opportunity Creation at Newmont Mining\, the world’s largest gold mining company. She has managed global exploration\, innovation\, energy and technical services functions\, working in 13 countries. Cindy has a BSc and MSc in Economic Geology from Colorado State University. \nJoin Zoom Meeting

SUMMARY:Sunday Science: Climate Change and our food system
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr. Cindy Parker\nTopic: Our Food Systems: Moving from Climate Change Problems to Climate Change Solutions—and Getting Healthier Along the Way! \nDr. Cindy Parker\nThis talk will briefly review the history and current status of our food systems\, including their effects on climate change and our health. We’ll take a brief look at how the effects of climate change on food systems have already contributed to hardship and migration around the world. We’ll focus on which specific foods and practices currently contribute the most to climate change and discuss alternatives that are better for our health and cause fewer greenhouse gas emissions. \nBio: Dr. Cindy Parker received her MD from the University of Arizona and practiced Family Medicine in the wilds of New Mexico and Alaska. Realizing that she wanted to keep people healthy\, she did a 2nd residency in Public Health and Preventive Medicine at Johns Hopkins\, earning a Masters in Public Health with a focus on the health impacts of climate change before joining the faculty at Johns Hopkins. Now recently retired\, she loves living in this gorgeous place\, hiking\, biking\, and gardening – and still teaches the occasional course in climate change and health. \nJoin Zoom Meeting \n
