DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr. John Harte\n \nTopic: Global Warming: Why the Problem Is Worse than You Thought… and the Solution is More Simple. \nTime:  10:00am \nPlace:  Salida Scout Hut\, 210 E. Sackett St. Salida\, CO. 81201 \nSummary: Dr. Harte presents a summary of the major findings\, and implications for policy\, from a 30-year climate research project at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory. The critical and pernicious role of feedbacks to the climate system will be emphasized. Some of the major myths about climate that pervade the media will be analyzed\, and effective ways to counter them will be suggested. The greatest myth of all is that solving global warming is impossible. Dr. Harte will provide an overview of a wide variety of approaches to preventing catastrophic warming\, and will assess the feasibility of each. Dr. Harte concludes that if we enlarge the boundaries of our thinking\, and approach the many threats to civilization systemically\, then a pathway exists to a sustainable future.\n \nBio: John Harte is a Professor of the Graduate School at the University of California\, Berkeley. He did his undergraduate studies at Harvard and his PhD at the University of Wisconsin. He has received a Guggenheim Fellowship\, the Leo Szilard prize from the American Physical Society\, and is a co- recipient of a 2006 George Polk award in investigative journalism. He is an elected Fellow of the California Academy of Sciences\, the American Physical Society\, the Ecological society of America\, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has also served on six National Academy of Sciences Committees and has authored over 240 scientific publications\, including eight books\, one of which\, “Consider a Spherical Cow” is a widely used textbook on environmental modeling. John’s research focuses on ecology\, global change\, complexity science\, and energy policy and sustainability. \nCentral Colorado Humanists sponsor Sunday Science presentations (normally) on the first Sunday of each month.  Each presentation is informative and features a science topic understandable by both scientists and non-scientists. Doors open at 9:30 AM and talk will start promptly at 10:00 AM. Admission is free and the public is welcome. Please join us!

DESCRIPTION:The Central Colorado Humanists participate each year in the “Adopt-A-Highway” program to clean up litter along our adopted section of CO 291\, and it’s that time of year once again. \nWe are responsible for a 2-mile section of the road that begins near the Pridemore bridge towards the northern end of CO 291. \nIt doesn’t take too long to do this\, as long as we have a few volunteers! CDOT provides trash bags and orange vests\, all you need to bring are gloves\, good shoes\, water\, and a hat. \nThis year’s cleanup is scheduled for Saturday\, May 28\, and to beat the heat let’s plan on starting at 9:00am. The more the merrier! We will meet at the gravel parking area\, on the west side of the highway\, just north of the bridge. This is the bridge over the Arkansas River on CO 291 between CR 191\, and CR 195. See you there on the 21st!

DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Bill Sample \nTopic: Aircraft Design and Operation for Safety \nTime:  10:00am Mountain Standard Time \nPlace:  ZOOM Meeting \nSummary:\nBill will discuss how safety statistics for aircraft compare to other forms of transportation.   Government agencies around the world regulate the design and operation of aircraft.  The regulations vary with the size of the aircraft and what it is used for. He will present the various design requirements\, pilot licensing\, and operating rules as they apply to tiny ultralight aircraft up through airliners. \nBio: \nBill has a BS in Electrical Engineering and an MS in Engineering Management.  He worked as an Avionics Systems Engineer for 38 years designing electronics for aircraft and space vehicles.  One of his responsibilities was insuring that the designs complied with world-wide government regulations that enforce safety requirements in the design and use of the equipment.  He has made good use of his designs by logging more than 7\,000 hours as a pilot.  He holds Air Transport and Flight Instructor ratings in single and multi-engine aircraft.  He has more than 120 students who have received various levels of FAA pilot licenses giving him insight into how pilots are trained for safety.  He earned college money working as an Air Taxi pilot where he flew under the FAA operating rules that insure safe operations when carrying passengers and cargo for hire. \n  \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/6911288841?pwd=OWg5T3pPNGI5emVPRTMwNzJ5T3BzUT09
