Wolves are absolutely essential to healthy ecosystems\, yet they continue to be persecuted. Among the questions she will address are: Is coexisting with wolves possible?  What is happening with Colorado’s wolves?  What good are wolves anyway? \nBurkhalter earned her ecology degree from the University of North Texas and has been working with wild canids in captivity for about six years. She represents Colorado Wild as the speaker. Colorado Wild is a small group of scientists and advocates who work to educate Colorado about our wildlife and wildlands. \nSunday Science for September will be September 6\, which is the Labor Day holiday AND the yard sale. DESCRIPTION:“APOE4: A Genetic Risk Factor for Alzheimer’s Disease” is the title of the Central Colorado Humanists Sunday Science program for August 2. Gaylene Stevens will discuss the Apolipoprotein E4 gene as a risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease (AD)\, the most common form of dementia worldwide. \nStevens’ presentation will cover the basics of late onset Alzheimer’s and focus on Apolipoprotein E4 gene as a risk factor. Many people are now learning from genetic analysis that they carry one or two copies of this gene. \nWhat it means and how it impacts your risk for AD will be discussed. You will hear of current research directions to find therapeutics and also what modifications to your diet and lifestyle may lower your risk for AD. \nStevens grew up in California’s Bay area\, earning her Bachelor’s degree in Bacteriology at UC Davis. Family took her to the southeast\, where she received her Master’s in Molecular Biology\, did research and taught. She retired to Salida and enjoys hiking\, biking\, reading and skiing. She has a personal interest in the APOE4 gene as multiple relatives have passed away from AD. \nSunday Science takes place at A Church in Salida\, at the corner of Fourth and D Streets. DESCRIPTION:Our speaker for Sunday Science on July 5 will be Cailey McDermott\, editor of the Mountain Mail.  McDermott is a native of Vermont and she earned a journalism degree from Saint Michael’s College in Colchester\, Vermont. She moved to Salida in 2010 and soon after earned a position at The Mail\, where she worked as a reporter for three years. \nMcDermott then operated her own photography and magazine publishing businesses before coming back to The Mail in 2023 to serve as its editor.  She recently was named managing editor of the Chaffee County Times\, and she will continue her position as editor at The Mail. \nCailey will be speaking from the perspective of an editor and journalist on the media\, communication\, and human behavior. \nSunday Science takes place at A Church in Salida\, at the corner of 4th and D Streets. Doors open at 9:30 a.m. and the talk will start at 10 a.m. The Sunday Science Hospitality Committee welcomes any contributions to the “treat table\,” including fruit and baked goods.

DESCRIPTION:Our Community Service Program coordinates an annual cleanup of a one-mile section of Highway 291. This is a rewarding\, fun way to help keep our community clean and beautiful. Many hands make light work! Come help. \nCDOT provides us with orange safety vests and trash bags\, then picks up the trash we collect. All you need to bring are gloves\, good shoes\, water\, and a hat. \nWe will gather at 9AM on Saturday May 16th. We will meet at the gravel parking area\, on the west side of Hwy 291\, just north of the bridge over the river.
