DESCRIPTION:The Central Colorado Humanists participate each year in the “Adopt-A-Highway” program to clean up litter along our adopted section of CO 291\, and it’s that time of year once again. \nWe are responsible for a 2-mile section of the road that begins near the Pridemore bridge towards the northern end of CO 291. \nIt doesn’t take too long to do this\, as long as we have a few volunteers! CDOT provides trash bags and orange vests\, all you need to bring are gloves\, good shoes\, water\, and a hat. \nThis year’s cleanup is scheduled for Saturday\, May 28\, and to beat the heat let’s plan on starting at 9:00am. The more the merrier! We will meet at the gravel parking area\, on the west side of the highway\, just north of the bridge. This is the bridge over the Arkansas River on CO 291 between CR 191\, and CR 195. See you there on the 21st!

DESCRIPTION:  \nSpeaker: Sandra Long\nTopic: Economics of Carbon Pricing \nDescription: \nSandy’s presentation will discuss the economics behind carbon pricing and how it compares to alternative policy options.  As noted in the recent Washington Post Opinion piece entitled “America’s inaction on climate is getting embarrassing”: “The best climate tool available would be a carbon tax.” Can our carbon emission targets be achieved without a carbon fee? Sandy will examine the importance of returning 100% of the carbon revenue to households. Most Americans would receive a monthly dividend equal to\, or greater than their increased costs. As for U.S. businesses\, Sandy will discuss the Border Carbon Adjustment and its’ critical intent to avoid the loss of jobs internationally and to maintain U.S. competitiveness.\nBoth of Colorado’s U.S. Senators have advocated for Carbon Pricing in the Build Back Better Bill.  What made it in the final bill\, and what the future holds\, will be discussed. \n  \n  \nBio:   \nSandra Long grew up in Colorado then moved to Dallas for college. She holds an Electrical Engineering degree and a Master of Business Administration from Southern Methodist University. For most of her career she was a product manager in telecom and power\, including four years in the solar power industry. She retired a year ago from Hewlett Packard Enterprise\, after moving to Buena Vista in 2019.\nSandy is the Group Leader for the newly formed Chaffee County Chapter of Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL). SUMMARY:Personal Hygiene Products Project
DESCRIPTION:CCH manages and supplies our monthly Personal Hygiene Products Project. On the first Wednesday of each month\, we distribute personal hygiene items such as soap\, shampoo\, deodorant\, and safety razors to those who come to the Community Center to receive their supplemental food boxes. Throughout the month we collect unused personal hygiene items from our travelling members and also purchase new items with donated funds. \nFor more information\, please call the  Community Center at 719-539-3351.
