SUMMARY:Sunday Science: Earth's Future: More Fire and Less Ice
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr. Mitch Wagener\nTopic: Sunday Science: Earth’s Future: More Fire and Less Ice \nDr. Mitch Wagener\nDr. Mitch Wagener has been teaching ecology\, climate ecology\, and related courses at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury since 1996. In 2019\, he received the Aquarion Environmental Champion Award\, Individual Communication category. That same year Dr. Wagener received an official citation from the Connecticut General Assembly for his efforts in climate change education and community service. His research interests include the impact of historical events—such as the Industrial Revolution—on the environment. \nMitch began life in the Midwest\, growing up a barefoot boy in the Ozarks and attending high school in Branson\, Missouri—before it became so famous. After spending a year as an exchange student in Chiang Mai\, Thailand\, he attended the University of Missouri\, where he completed an undergrad degree in Fisheries and Wildlife. After college he moved to Fairbanks\, Alaska to attend graduate school. Mitch received a masters degree in Stream Ecology and a doctorate in Soil Ecology during his 13 years in Alaska. There too\, he met the lovely Rita Kabali\, a native of Uganda\, East Africa\, to whom he has now been married 37 years. They have two lively daughters\, Rohanna 31 (a history teacher in New Haven) and Danika 23 (attending nursing school). They also recently welcomed their first grandchild\, Leon\, who is three years old. Mitch enjoys—among other things—watching his grandson grow up and explaining climate change to the public. \nSummary of talk:\nClimate change is the greatest challenge we face and will be our grandchildren’s. In a warmer world\, weather events will be more severe\, sea levels higher\, and people will be displaced. The study of climate change is developing very quickly. \nSignificant new information is coming out – literally – every day. This talk will explain the basics but also mix in some of this new information to deepen our understanding of the world and our future. \nJoin the Zoom Meeting \nMeeting ID: 821 3235 0597\nPasscode: 770213

SUMMARY:Sunday Science: Current Research on saving the Boreal Toad in Colorado by Timothy Korpita
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Timothy Korpita\nTopic: Sunday Science: Current Research on saving the Boreal Toad in Colorado \nBio: Tim Korpita is a PhD candidate in the McKenzie Lab in the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Department at the University of Colorado-Boulder. He studies the way microbial communities interact with their hosts\, in a variety of systems\, and tries to develop conservation tools that incorporate recent advances in microbiome science. In Colorado\, he has been working with the endangered boreal toad and has participated in efforts to restore the toad to their natural place in mountain wetlands. For the last few years\, the majority of this work has taken place in the drainages in the west of Chaffee County. \nBoreal Toad\nSummary: Boreal Toads are a high elevation amphibian species that were formerly common across the mountains of Colorado. The last few decades have seen a precipitous decline in Boreal Toad populations all over the southern rocky mountains\, mainly due to a recently emerged fungal pathogen. The McKenzie Lab at CU Boulder has been developing a probiotic treatment that uses naturally occurring skin bacteria to help the toads to fight off the pathogen. The last few years have seen field trials of these treatments on toad populations in Chaffee County. This talk will touch on the pathogen and its impact on our boreal toads\, the science behind probiotic treatments and what we have learned from the recent field trials\, and the future of toads in Colorado. \nJoin the ZOOM meeting.

SUMMARY:Sunday Science: Local Surface\, Ground Water Quality Study
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Rick Hum\nTopic: Sunday Science: Sunday Science:\nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/82203285409?pwd=bmxGMDhWUE4zdHEwaWNGWHRFV29zZz09 \nThe next Central Colorado Humanist Science Sunday Zoom presentation on April 4 will focus on the quality of our local water supplies. \nWater expert Rick Hum will review a report that compares the water quality of the county to the Arkansas River and other river basins of the state\, based on the assessment of water quality standards for the classified uses (Water Supply\, Agriculture\, Aquatic Life Use\, etc.). \nIf the assessments show that any of the standards are not met\, the water body is considered impaired. For the most part\, Chaffee County’s water quality is very good\, but there are few areas with impairments. Hum will show these areas and what the impairments have been over time. \nHum intends to touch on ground water sources and surface water sources\, and will refer audience members to a U.S. Geological Survey report that has a good deal of information concerning groundwater sources. He will also provide information on the Mesa Antero Water Association wells. \nAfter moving to Colorado in 1972 from New York City\, Rick was active on many community non-profit boards including the Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center\, the Breckenridge Music Institute\, Father Dyer Church\, Summit Huts and was a founding board member of the Breckenridge Foundation that became the Summit Foundation. \nHe served on the Breckenridge Town Board for three years before he was elected to two terms as Summit County Commissioner. Hum was the first Deputy Director of Great Outdoors Colorado in 1995. He also was Chief Information Officer for Colorado Commission of Higher Education. He worked for National Jewish Health as the Project Manager for the development of the Research Database Project. \nHum has been appointed to two terms on the state Water Quality Control Commission and he previously served as Chair of the Commission. He was appointed to the Chaffee County Marijuana Excise Tax Board and served as Chair for the first two years of this organization. \nHe was a co-author of the Chaffee County Community Check-up survey and report. He is also president of the Mesa Antero Water Association; Vice Chair of the Peak to Peak Pickleball Club Board of Directors; Vice Chair of the Chaffee Common Grounds – Citizens Advisory Committee and Secretary/Treasurer of Envision Chaffee County. \nRick and his wife\, Sue Ann\, moved to Chaffee County in 2014.  Sue Ann is an accomplished artist\, and they both enjoy attending live music performances. \nTopic: Sunday Science Talk\nTime: Apr 4\, 2021 10:00 AM Mountain Time (US and Canada) \nJoin Zoom Meeting \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/82203285409?pwd=bmxGMDhWUE4zdHEwaWNGWHRFV29zZz09 \nMeeting ID: 822 0328 5409\nPasscode: 084536 \nOne tap mobile\n+16699006833\,\,82203285409#\,\,\,\,*084536# US (San Jose)\n+12532158782\,\,82203285409#\,\,\,\,*084536# US (Tacoma)

DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Mark Mitchell\nTopic: American Indian Lifeways in the San Luis Valley \nBio: Dr. Mark D. Mitchell is the Research Director for Paleocultural Research Group\, a nonprofit that conducts research\, trains students\, and educates the public on the archaeology and paleoecology of the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains. Mitchell holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Colorado at Boulder and has more than 35 years of experience in archaeological field and laboratory research. His research interests\nspan the archaeology of two different regions: the Northern Great Plains in central and western North Dakota and the Southern Rocky Mountains in Colorado and New Mexico. \nMitchell’s Southern Rockies research focuses on American Indian land use in the San Luis Valley and adjacent mountains. He is the author of journal articles\, book chapters\, and monographs on the archaeology of the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains. \nSummary:\nThe archaeological record of American Indians in the San Luis Valley is a record of hunting and gathering. But the strategies American Indians used to subsist in the valley’s cold-desert environment were not unchanging. Both residents and visitors alike adapted to shifting environmental conditions\, transformative technological innovations\, demographic changes\, and the appearance of European and American colonists and settlers. In this talk\, Dr. Mark Mitchell will explore the archaeology of the San Luis Valley\, drawing on the results of recent public archaeology projects. \nClick here to join this Zoom meeting.
