CCH monthly event...
Sunday Science, 9/4/2016
CCH is happy to announce our Sunday Science program for the month of September: "Decoding Neanderthals". We'll learn about the interaction between Neanderthals and early Homo sapiens, thanks to an excellent PBS 'Nova' program. A time for questions and answers will follow, and light refreshments will be served.
Our monthly science forum, held on the first Sunday of each month, is free and open to the public, and always features a topic that is understandable by both scientists and non-scientists. We hope you can join us for this informative presentation, followed by coffee and light refreshments, further discussion, and socializing.
See the 'Events' page for more details, and please plan to attend!
Yard Sale! 9/2 - 9/4/2016

The Salida Community Center receives a delivery of non-perishable food on the first Wednesday of each month for distribution to qualifying homeless, elderly, and low-income members of the community. CCH has offered to help unload the truck, shelve the items, and sort them into boxes for delivery. Then, on the next day (Thursday), CCH is leading the effort to supply those same people with personal hygiene products.
Your help is needed at the SCC on both days! Please see the Events page for details on the specific times assistance is needed, and then mark your calendars for this ongoing community service opportunity.

Scholarship Winners Announced!
Central Colorado Humanists announced the group has awarded four $1,000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors in Chaffee County.
The winners are Taylor Stack from Salida High School and Keenan Barr, Jesse Osborne and Samantha Scott, all from Buena Vista High School.
The awards can be used toward tuition to be used at the university of the recipient’s choice, according to a press release. The four students plan various college majors, including biomedical engineering, wildlife biology animal science and horticulture.
The awards were based on the student’s completion of an application, which included transcripts, letters of recommendation and a list of community service activities. Applicants also included a personal statement on how they hoped to use the scholarship funds and an essay on using humanist values as the basis of ethical decision-making.
“We usually award two scholarships each year,” said Scholarship Committee Chair Candace Weiss, “but this year the applications were especially good, and we felt that two additional awards should be made. Raising money for scholarships is one of the principal activities of the local Humanists chapter.”

2016-2017 Scholarship Fund!
CCH is pleased to announce that, thanks to the generosity of its members and fellow community donors, our $2000 goal for the previous school year was met and exceeded, enabling us to award not two but four $1000 scholarships (see announcement elsewhere on this page). Donations will continue to be accepted (see 'Donate' button at the bottom of this page), and will be applied toward the next school year, when our new goal is $7000! This will enable us to provide follow-up support to previous winners as well as new scholarships to high school seniors. We appreciate everyone who has donated in the past, and hope you will consider us again with your future support.
Central Colorado Humanists is an organization of people from Chaffee County and the surrounding area who believe in the dignity of human beings and their corresponding responsibility to live in accordance with the goals of Humanism.
We are primarily non-theist, in that we follow a philosophy free of supernaturalism, and believe that human goals and values are best developed within the context of individual and community needs.
We welcome anyone interested in Humanism to explore our site, and then feel free to join us in any of the activities described.
Thanks for visiting!
